About MN RIMS

The Minnesota Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) was founded in 1937 and has grown to one of the nation's largest RIMS chapters with approximately 200 deputy members. The chapter offers 6-8 events each year, which include networking opportunities, guest speakers addressing important topics in the risk management industry, and round table discussions on pertinent issues. 

Along with the educational and networking support provided to our membership, the chapter is committed to providing students with educational opportunities through seminars and workshops (offered to full-time students at no cost), speakers, internships, and scholarships.

MN RIMS Mission  

Advance the risk management profession through networking, communications, education, and professional development.

Objective

Board of Directors: Advance the risk management profession by providing input and direction on proposed MN RIMS initiatives, sessions, and events.

Responsibilities 

    • Oversee work performed by financial administrator, which includes preparation of monthly financial statements and issuance of payments.

    • Monitor available cash balance to ensure sufficient cash to pay vendors.

    • Create the annual budget as well as comparing the actual revenues and expenses incurred against the budget.

    • Regularly inform the Board of key financial events, trends, concerns, and assessment of fiscal health in addition to sharing financial reporting (balance sheet and income statement) on a monthly basis and making these reports available to the Board.

    • Ensure tax return is prepared and filed and renew non-profit status with State of MN.

    • Financial statement review - manage annual external financial review.

    • The Treasurer is also a Director on the Board

      • Attend Board meetings, which are typically 60-90 minutes and held once a month.

      • Provide input on proposed MN RIMS initiatives, sessions, and events.

      • Promote, attend, and assist at MN RIMS programming sessions, Annual Meeting, and other events when possible.   

      • Perform other duties as agreed to with the Board.  

    Terms/Participation

    The Treasurer shall serve one two-year (2) term. The time commitment for this position, above other Director responsibilities, is typically 2-3 hours per month depending on activities/projects. 

    Qualifications

    Required:  The Treasurer shall be a “Professional Member” of an Organizational Member of MN RIMS and also a Director on the Board.  

    Preferred:  Basic understanding of financial statements, financial audits or reviews, and preparing a budget.
